Aber mit der Entwicklung der digitalen Prozesse hat sich das Medium gewandelt. Wo das traditionelle analoge Bild zeigt, was der Fotograf gesehen hat, repr\u00e4sentiert das digitale Bild hingegen, was der Computer in jeder Kamera glaubt, was wir sehen m\u00f6chten. Das moderne Foto ist das Produkt eines computergenerierten Algorithmus und der Einfall von Licht auf eine fotoempfindliche Oberfl\u00e4che ist nicht mehr das Ende des Prozesses, sondern der Anfang. Somit haben wir gelernt, den digitalen Prozess zu f\u00fcrchten, aufgrund seiner F\u00e4higkeit zu verzerren und zu t\u00e4uschen. Aber wir haben nicht gelernt ihn zu lieben, f\u00fcr die zus\u00e4tzliche Vielfalt, die er bietet. Unser Verst\u00e4ndnis reicht nur soweit, dass wir wissen, dass Pixel manipuliert werden k\u00f6nnen, und wir haben noch nicht damit angefangen die Folgen der Arbeit mit dem komplexen Wissenssystem, das in jedem digitalen Bild steckt, zu erkennen. Ein digitales Bild in dasselbe konzeptuelle Umfeld einzupassen, das uns geholfen hat, ein analoges Bild zu verstehen, ist, als w\u00fcrde man Wasser in einem geflochtenen Korb transportieren. Der Korb mag zwar wie ein Wassereimer aussehen, aber es ist einfach die falsche Struktur f\u00fcr die Aufgabe und wir verlieren alle Vorteile des alten Prozesses und verweigern uns den Chancen des neuen. Doch das indexikalische Medium Fotografie ist weitgehend durch computergenerierte Prozesse ersetzt worden, welche all unsere Auffassung vom Bild als Beweisst\u00fcck infrage stellen. Ausgehend vom historischen Beispiel der Aufnahmen von Kriegen des 19. Jahrhunderts, die Roger Fenton und Alexander Gardner w\u00e4hrend eines \u00e4hnlichen Umbruchs (des \u00dcbergangs von der Zeichnung zur Fotografie) machten, wird argumentiert, dass die Verwendung von Termini eines vergangenen Zeitalters zur Beschreibung eines neuen gewisse Gefahren birgt. Daraus resultierende Missverst\u00e4ndnisse drohen die Botschaft zu verzerren, manchmal so weit, dass dargestellte Tatsachen negiert werden.
