Wealth, responsibility and obligation are three terms that are inextricably linked to the subject of inheritance. At a time when the gap between rich and poor is widening, the question of social justice and distribution is increasingly becoming the focus of public debate. In order to explore this question, Frederik Ferschke dedicates his work “Erben verpflichtet” (Inheritance Obligated) to the personal life stories of different people, trying to work out the contrasts between experienced history and lived heritage. Memories, commitments, and desires form a dense root system of biographical narratives. Frederik Ferschke ventures into these ramifications with the question of what a responsible approach to inheritance can look like, and in the process discovers the sometimes contradictory life of its own of some inheritances.

Frederik Ferschke, born 1992 in Berlin, has been working as a freelance photographer for over 10 years. Since 2014, he has been the honorary director of the association Fotografie Berlin and works for numerous organizations throughout Germany in the field of education and sustainable development.
