In this lecture for the Symposium image/con/text. Complementary Testimonies in Documentary Discourse Max Pinckers presents his photobook Margins of Excess with a particular focus on how image-text relations form documentary narratives. Not believing in an absolute truth or ultimate position of epistemological authority, his documentary works bring together multiple perspectives in which texts sampled from various sources encounter photographs thus creating a narrative context. In Pinckers’ photobooks, reality and fiction are intertwined. Not to fool us, but to reveal a more intricate view of our world, which takes into account the intersubjective and fictitious nature of the categories we use to perceive and define it. While text and image trustedly offer each other context for our understanding, there is also a process of contextualisation happening between the different images put into the same body of work, namely Margins of Excess. Our reading of them as documentary is heavily dependent on the context they are nested in.
