60 percent of commercial fish stocks are exploited to the maximum and 33 percent are already overfished. These endangered ecosystems provide an important part of the food base for hundreds of millions of people worldwide. As the world’s population continues to grow, so does the demand for animal protein. To meet the demand for fish and fishery products in Germany, more than 80% of the demand is imported.
With “Fish 2.0” Anna Brauns shows the research of a German startup on a new, sustainable protein source: “Cellular Agriculture”. With the help of modern biotechnology, animal fish cells grow in the laboratory. Can this be the future of the fishing industry? A photographic accompaniment to current research – as a vision for tomorrow.
