Data Visualizations – Tools of Insights. Symposium on 24. and 25.11. at the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts

Image from «1942-2022. A Life» by Kristina Kaysen. The work is part of the accompanying exhibition on the theme «My Life as a Data source» from 11.11.-11.12.2022 in the Atrium of the Design Center of the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Expo Plaza 2.

Images and animations of data sets have been accompanying people not only since the Corona pandemic, but already the interpretation of the weather map determines everyday life in a particularly subliminal way: Do I take the umbrella tomorrow or not?

Images of data can take many forms: drawings, pixel images, collages, graphs, animations, and interactive applications. We understand ‘data visualizations – tools of knowledge as a translation of existing data into image forms, which in a further step generates new knowledge and insights.

The aim of the symposium is to make the data and their forms of visualization visible in the interaction of individual design disciplines, in the production of the visualization programs, the contexts of use, and the social, cultural, and political systems of interpretation. Through this mediation of both interdisciplinary connections and the social relevance of the design activity, the Colloquium connects the scientific exchange with the experiences of all users.

There will be three perspectives on the topic:
– The user perspective from the point of view of visual communication, medicine, architecture
– The manufacturer’s perspective from the point of view of computer science, graphic design, cartography,
– The theory perspective from the point of view of historical development, critical cartography.
