Prof. Lars Bauernschmitt, born in Hamburg in 1963, studied communication design with a focus on photography and editorial design at the University of Essen (formerly Folkwang Schule) between 1985 and 1992. From 1993 to 2008 he was managing director of the VISUM photo agency. In addition, he was a member of the board of the German Association of Professional Image Providers (BVPA) from 2001 to 2010, serving as chairman of the board since 2003.
He has been a professor at Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts since 2008, spokesperson for the Photojournalism and Documentary Photography program since 2011, and also Dean of Studies in the Design and Media Department from 2013 to 2015. Lars Bauernschmitt is a member of various committees and juries as well as a consultant for picture agencies, lecturer at the Justus-Liebig-University of Gießen and a specialist author. Together with Michael Ebert, he wrote the Handbook of Photojournalism, published by d.punkt Verlag Heidelberg.
