Born in 1989 in a small settlement near Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan, and raised in Germany, Jana Mai has been fascinated and moved by the life stories of people she met on her many travels in Europe, Africa and Asia. Since then she has been exploring questions of collective memory, the sense of home and belonging, and the relationship between traditional culture and identity.
In 2021 she won the World Report Award in the Student Award category and received the STERN scholarship. Jana Mai works as a freelance portrait and documentary photographer for publications including STERN, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, DER SPIEGEL and DIE ZEIT.
