Utkarsh Singh

Utkarsh Singh, born in Gwalior in 1999, is an Indian artist. He graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology in 2022. With a background in fashion technology, Utkarsh discovered the camera as a medium of expression and documented every phase of his life, fascinated by the idea of finding the image. For his master’s degree in photographic design he worked on ideas of the Anthropocene and activism.

He came to Hochschule Hannover on an exchange programme to work in documentary photography and photojournalism and to present his work in Germany. He worked on the idea of diaspora and intercultural journeys through personal narratives, questioning the geopolitics of the contemporary world. He is deeply inspired by the work of Josef Koudelka, Nikita Teryoshin, Bharat Sikka and Arko Datto, often combining artistry with documentation and blurring the boundaries between reality and imagination through his lens.

His interests include contemporary social problems, environmental conflicts and self-reflection. He is fascinated by political absolutism. Based in India, he believes in interdisciplinary approaches and works with photographs, moving images, video, text and performance. Utkarsh is also a member of the Fotobus Society.
