Mario Wezel
Mario Wezel (*1988 in Nürtingen) lives and works in Hanover. He employs imaging techniques such as digital and analog photography, digital and analog video material, as well as thermal imaging cameras as the foundation of his artistic process. His exhibition practice encompasses wall-sized, wallpapered photographs, high-quality framed fine art prints, multi-channel video projections, printed textiles, and text fragments on various materials.
Drawing from his own biography, Wezel addresses social themes such as identity, coming of age, and family. Since the birth of his first child in 2017, his focus has sharpened on fatherhood, masculinity, and familial role models. Documenting his personal experiences and making them accessible and tangible to viewers through a conceptual framework—whether in book form (The End of Immortality, FOTOHOFedition 2023) or through spatially transformative exhibition concepts—is the aim of this process.
His work has been shown in group and solo exhibitions, including at Museum Hilversum (NL), Somerset House (UK), Copenhagen Photo Festival (DK), Organ Vida (HR), Horizonte Zingst (GER), Galerie Bohai, and the Lumix Festival. Mario Wezel works on assignment for magazines such as Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, SZ Magazin, The New York Times, among others. He also leads workshops and teaches at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hanover.

Mario Wezel (*1988 in Nürtingen) lebt und arbeitet in Hannover. Er nutzt bildgebende Verfahren wie digitale und analoge Fotografie, digitales und analoges Videomaterial oder auch Wärmebildkameras als Grundlage seines künstlerisch-dokumentarischen Arbeitsprozesses. Ausgehend von seiner eigenen Biografie verhandelt Wezel gesellschaftliche Themen rund um Identität, Vaterschaft und familiäre Strukturen.
Seine erste Monografie «Das Ende der Unsterblichkeit» erschien 2023 bei FOTOHOFedition, «Voyage Voyage» folgte 2025 als Künstlerbuch im Eigenverlag.
Seine Arbeiten wurden u.a. beim Images Vevey Book Award, den Sony World Photography Awards und dem Ian Parry Scholarship ausgezeichnet und in Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen im Museum Hilversum (NL), dem Copenhagen Photofestival (DK), dem Somerset House (GB) und der Galerie Bohai (D) gezeigt.
Für Veröffentlichungen und in Auftragsarbeiten arbeitet Mario Wezel u. a. für Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, Zeit Magazin oder auch The New York Times. Seit dem Jahr 2021 unterrichtet er an der Hochschule Hannover.
