Teaching areas: Visual language, Photo Project

Mario Wezel (*1988 in Nürtingen) lives and works in Hannover. He uses imaging techniques such as digital and analogue photography, digital and analogue video and thermal imaging cameras as the basis of his artistic-documentary practice. Drawing on his own biography, Wezel addresses social themes around identity, fatherhood and family structures.
His first monograph, ‘Das Ende der Unsterblichkeit’, was published by FOTOHOFedition in 2023, followed in 2025 by ‘Voyage Voyage’, a self-published artist’s book.

His work has received awards including the Images Vevey Book Award, the Sony World Photography Awards and the Ian Parry Scholarship, and has been shown in solo and group exhibitions at Museum Hilversum (NL), Copenhagen Photofestival (DK), Somerset House (GB) and Galerie Bohai (D).

For publications and commissions, Mario Wezel works for Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, Zeit Magazin and The New York Times, among others. He has taught at Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts since 2021.
