Panel talk with Prof. Lars Bauernschmitt at Pictaday 2025.

AI in the everyday life of photo agencies and editorial offices of newspapers and magazines.

prompt: „Create a photograph of a vintage maisonette apartment with wooden floorboards. Depict a LAN party scene featuring four people aged between 14 and 18, actively gaming on a PS3 while casually smoking. The ambiance should reflect a lively, relaxed atmosphere, Focus on the details of the room and the expressions of the participants during the gaming session.“

How is artificial intelligence changing the work of picture agencies? This question is at the centre of the sixth survey on the German picture market. Prof. Lars Bauernschmitt, Michael Gottschalk, Head of Content at dpa picture alliance, and picture editor Henner Flohr from F.A.Z. will discuss the results of the survey on 3 April 2025 at Pictaday in Hamburg. Since the beginning of 2022 at the latest, artificial intelligence has found its way into working with images in newspapers and magazines. This presents opportunities and risks. Artificial intelligence can speed up editorial processes. It helps to label images or adjust colour moods. But it harbours risks. AI-generated photorealistic images can suggest reality and convey false information. What does the new technology mean for the work of photo agencies and editorial offices of newspapers and magazines and what are the consequences for their collaboration?

The “image market – business trends” working group from the Visual Journalism and Documentary Photography degree programme at Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts is behind the study. In collaboration with the Bundesverband professioneller Bildanbieter e.V. (BVPA), the team led by Prof Lars Bauernschmitt investigated how German picture agencies use and evaluate AI technologies.

The results of the survey will be presented in detail at Pictaday on April 3, 2025 in Hamburg.

How important is AI in the image market?

In a detailed interview, Prof. Dr. Lars Bauernschmitt and Dr. Stefan Hartmann shed light on the background and evaluate the results of the current survey.

AI is a key topic for picture agencies – even if only a few offer AI images. Almost all of them use AI tools, especially for supporting tasks such as editing, keywording and research. There are greater reservations when it comes to creative processes such as image or text creation. Legal uncertainties and a lack of usage rights for training data make the use of AI image generators difficult – especially for smaller agencies. The issue of copyright protection also remains unresolved.

The whole interview can be read on pictorial-online.com.

A central point of the ongoing discussions about artificial intelligence in everyday editorial work is the question of the areas in which AI can be used.

Prof. Dr. Lars Bauernschmitt
