“How can an entire nation blindly follow its leader without questioning?” This is a question that many people have probably been asking themselves since February 24, 2022. Photographer Nanna Heitmann is also preoccupied with this thought. She has been studying at Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts since 2015 and has been living in Moscow for several years. There, she wants to use her photojournalistic work to historically document the surrounding events. In doing so, she sought to “illuminate the gap between the reality of the war in Ukraine and the distorted perception cultivated in Russian society.”

Now the Galerie für Fotografie dedicates a solo exhibition to Nanna Heitmann in Hannover. Under the title “War and Peace” her photos will be shown there from 02 September to 08 October 2023. The gallery explicitly features Nanna Heitmann’s works from Russia and Ukraine. The war changed Nanna Heitmann’s view of her adopted country. The exhibition wants to show this change of perspective in pictures. There will also be a panel discussion between Nanna Heitmann and Rolf Nobel, professor emeritus at Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts, on Friday, 01 September 2023 at 7 pm

Nanna Heitmann was born in Ulm in 1994 and has already had an impressive career during her studies. In 2023, she was accepted as a full member of the internationally renowned agency MAGNUM. Her photographs have been published in the New York Times, TIMES Magazine, National Geographic, and SZ Magazine, among others. In addition, Nanna Heitmann won at World Press Photo, among numerous other awards.
