UTOPIA

In his bachelor’s project, Alex Martin examines the history and possible decline of the Hungarian industrial planned town of Dunaújváros.

In 1949 the communist government of Hungary decided to present the country as a land of iron and steel. To achieve this utopian goal, it needed new industrial complexes and the housing to go with them. Construction began in 1950, and in 1951 Sztálinváros / Dunaújváros was granted town status. Production started in 1954. The new industrial centre was intended not only for steel production but also to show the world that perfect socialism worked. Surprisingly, the utopian system kept working after the fall of communism and even reached its peak in the late 1990s and early 2000s. But after 74 years the bubble has burst. In summer 2025 the steelworks filed for bankruptcy for the second time – and this time it really went under. The question now is: is this the end of the iron and steel industry in Hungary, or will a miracle happen and bring the utopia back to life?
