Teaching areas: Foreign reporting, long-term reportage, editing and sound

Born in 1982, Florian Müller first trained as a media designer for image and sound and worked as an editor and camera operator before studying communication design with a focus on photography (BA) in Hannover and in Ahmedabad, India. He then completed the interdisciplinary master’s programme ‘Design und Medien’. In his master’s thesis he examines the credibility of journalistic photography in the digital age and explores the potential of the concept of authorial photography.

As a documentary photographer he works on extensive long-term projects in which he immerses himself deeply in the lives of his protagonists. He is committed to socio-documentary photography but pushes its traditional boundaries by bringing other media into his work and trying out new narrative approaches. Alongside his own photographic practice, he works on commission for magazines, foundations and NGOs, among others, and has taught documentary storytelling and moving-image design as a guest lecturer at Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts since 2015. He also shares his knowledge in workshops and talks.
