‘My degree gave me a toolbox that now lets me develop freely as a photographer.’

Graduate China Hopson looks back on her time as a student in an interview.

China Hopson studied at Hochschule Hannover until 2019 and spent a semester abroad in Birmingham. Since then the photographer has worked for numerous editorial clients including DIE ZEIT, Greenpeace Magazin, Vogue Germany and Süddeutsche Zeitung. She is also active in the Female Photoclub and heads its Hannover chapter.

In March 2023 the photojournalist told the online platform ‘myurbanology’: ‘My view of things is different from that of the majority society – emotional and from the inside, rather than looking in from outside.’ With her photo projects, she wants to represent an Afro-German perspective and her own community in the media.

China Hopson now also teaches as an associate lecturer on the Visual Journalism and Documentary Photography programme.
