‘I don’t look for silence – and yet it’s everywhere’
A young photographer drifts through the city and discovers quiet places that hardly anyone sees.

‘Zone C’ is an essayistic photographic work by Minoo Hassanzadeh that goes beyond simply exploring the area around Hannover. In 2022 Minoo began documenting her everyday trips by bus and train. In doing so, she tells the stories of individual moments. There is no accompanying text; the photos read like extracts from her diary.
A change of place and movement, spending hours outdoors and roaming unfamiliar places – this helps Minoo sort out the thoughts in her head. Her camera goes with her, and carefully constructed single images emerge. ‘I don’t consciously look for silence, and yet the places I pass through are marked by silence,’ she says.
On these wanderings, Minoo meets few people, and so she ends up talking in her head to the objects she discovers: ‘For example, I see a tree and think how beautiful it is. Then I get the feeling that nobody else pays much attention to this tree. It just stands there alone. And I ask it, for example: how old are you?’ says the photographer. It is moments like these that make her perceive and appreciate her surroundings. For Minoo Hassanzadeh, places have a character, just like people.
