Final projects to be seen at GAF Hannover between June 22 and July 2, 2023.

Photo from the work "Because I've always been James" by winner Jana Mai

In their final exhibition, the Bachelor graduates of the Visual Journalism and Documentary Photography program show how the media of photography and film can be used to reflect on current issues of our decade.

Anna Brauns looks into the laboratory of a German start-up for “Fish 2.0” and deals with the question of how the demand for animal protein can be met in the future. Ricardo Wiesinger, on the other hand, traveled to Spain’s Sierra Nevada, a region with extremely low rainfall and an acute water emergency, for “In April a Thousand Rains,” and met people who are worried about their homes. On La Palma, the consequences of the 85-day volcanic eruption of 2021 are still visible today. Constantin Rimpel has documented how these influence life on the island in his project “El Isla Resiliente”.

In “Between the Layers,” Viola Maiwald sheds light on natural gas production in Lower Saxony. While the documentary “Y Do I” by Valentin Seuss tells about the DIY culture in the skateboard and BMX scene, Tina Kernchen goes on a cinematic quest for tolerance, faith and wisdom in her film “Moner Manush”. In “The Thief of Femininity,” Amelie Sachs highlights the male-oriented perspective in gynecology through an overlooked syndrome. The work “Weil ich schon immer James war” (Because I’ve always been James), in which photographer Jana Mai accompanies the young transman James on his way to a self-determined self, also deals with questions of gender and sex.

Family is the theme of Anastasia Shvachko. In her photo book “Do svidaniya, mama” she tells how the war between Russia and Ukraine tests her relationship with her family. At a time when the gap between rich and poor is widening, Frederik Ferschke has looked at the idea of social justice and the distribution of inheritance: “Inheritance obliges”.

In his project “Is it Lego or is it real?” On the other hand, Christian Platz deals with a world in which reality and fantasy merge in a fascinating way. Questions of fictionality and truth also determine the work of Elias Holzknecht. His “Encyclopedia of Potential Truth” is a photographic exploration of history(s) and its narrative construction. An attempt to think in and with images.
