Groundhog Day for the humble sandwich: a homage
Simple, familiar, underrated: a photographic declaration of love to the simplest meal of the day.
By Philip Jackwerth (photos), Rosa Burczyk (text)
We often do things for years before we realise what place they have in our everyday lives. Whether it’s brushing our teeth in the evening or looking in the mirror in the morning. Photographer Philip Jackwerth’s work plays with these everyday things: bread as an object of self-reflection. The photo series reveals a fascination with repeating patterns and structures. ‘Routines such as preparing meals every day give us a glimpse of the essential structure of life itself,’ says the photographer. The sandwiches are made from whatever the fridge has to offer or is left over at home. The series is an ode to the seemingly ordinary, an ode to our daily bread – and it even became a photo book.
