‘Now things really get going!’ A mood of anticipation among our first-year students.
The Visual Journalism and Documentary Photography programme welcomed 38 first-year students on Wednesday. ‘It’s important that you enjoy your studies. Otherwise something’s wrong.’ With these words, Professor Michael Trippel greeted the new faces in his welcome speech. The other lecturers introduced themselves too. Then it was the students’ turn, and it quickly became clear that their goals and visions vary widely – but they all want to learn how to tell good stories.
Charlie (22) has just finished his vocational diploma in design. ‘For a long time I didn’t know what I wanted to study. I was torn between art and biology. Then I had the idea of simply combining the two by becoming a photojournalist,’ he says.
Amelie (31) is keen on storytelling and a hands-on degree: ‘I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in and talking about pictures with the others. I think you learn the most by exchanging ideas with other people.’
Tim (22) has already trained as an IT specialist. He came across the Visual Journalism and Documentary Photography programme at a bachelor’s exhibition in the Galerie für Fotografie. ‘I found it really exciting and realised that, although I enjoy computer science, I miss the connection with people. That’s why I applied here, and luckily I got in,’ he says.
Now the first-years are eager to see what lies ahead. ‘I’m definitely nervous, because this is a big step for me. I think it’s a huge privilege to be able to study again and learn so much,’ says Amelie.
The first round of introductions, at least, is done. ‘I was really excited about who I’d meet and what would happen in the first week. Now I think the atmosphere here is great,’ says Charlie. So the studies can begin – or, in Tim’s words: ‘Now things really get going!’
